What is Experiential Education?
At
CLAS Ropes course Experiential
Education means that facilitators contrive challenges that will build
knowledge, skills and values. Experiential
Education allows students to make their own discoveries through direct
experience, rather than relying on what they have read or
heard. It is more than just doing, it is learning by doing. The
learning can be observed while the students reflect on thier own
experiences.
CLAS Ropes Course is a unique
series of team and relationship building exercises, nestled in a park
like setting along the Provo River.
Ropes Course are designed to be a fun and benificial experience. You will have the chance to experience and internalize principles, values, and concepts. You and your group can work on specific skills such as: problem solving, leadership, communication, conflict resolution, group cooperation, trust, and self-confidence. Participants of all abilities and ages cooperate together to accommodate group and individual victories. By attempting a graduated series of events in a supportive atmosphere, teams can realise thier potential and complete challenges that at first seemed impossible. Here is an example of a CLAS challenge scenario: Your group’s plane has just crashed into a mountain. You are all hiking through the wilderness, and you come to a murky, snake infested swamp. Your team must get to the other side of the swamp using only the resources provided. Your group must do their best to work together, because consequences occur if anyone touches the ground "swamp". The group is then given several boards as resource material to be used to build a passageway across several stumps that represent the swamp area. They are then required to negotiate a strategy for all team members to cross the imaginary swamp safely. Following the activity, all groups, teams, or families process their experience through discussion. A business group may spend more time discussing how the activity relates to job success whereas a Scout group may take a couple of minutes discussing how they applied the principles of Scouting to accomplish the task and Families can converse over their experience pulling together on behalf of the whole. CLAS Ropes Course also utilizes plenty of high course activities as well. We have zip-lines, balance beams, climbing towers and a giant swing. Each high course activity requires ropes, harnesses and helmets, along with a qualified instructor to guide course participants through each challenging experience. A Ropes Course provides the opportunity for everyone to get involved. Family reunion attendees encourage 70 year-old grandparents to do the same activities as their middle-aged children and very young grandchildren. The course is a great equalizer because girls, boys, old and young work together to achieve group success. This is a place where the ‘win-win’ philosophy is put into practice and can be observed first hand. | |
